Pretty good, quick rough way to create shape. You might want to explain more about creating your own custom shapes that can be reused.

I would have used Marquees, I think it would be much easier+accurate, no?

Not if you're keeping it vector. Marquees cannot subtract from vector shapes. If you're dealing with a raster image, then yes.
