This 1985 video shows the legendary Herbert von Karajan, the greatest conductor of all time, leading the Berlin Philharmonic in Beethoven's "Leonore III" overture, part 1 of 2.
This is an excerpt from one of von Karajan's Legacy videos of the 1980s, in which he filmed his performances of the core classical repertory. They are the finest concert films ever produced. 37 of these videos have been issued on the Sony label, but this excerpt comes from one of the films that has not yet been been released in the U.S. (It was, however, broadcast in Sept. 2000 on American television, from which airing the current S-VHS video was recorded.)
A list of some of the finest Karajan film recordings appears here:
2008 marks von Karajan's 100th birthday, and to honour the occasion, Sony in Japan has released the remaining Legacy films (including the compilation of Beethoven overtures) which aficionados have been awaiting for years. It is hoped that Sony will presently release this overture compilation on DVD in North America.

Beethoven and Karajan is by far the best combination for my ears, he performs the way I think Beethoven was thinking of, I love all Beethoven´s music!!
I adore Beethoven. I have an old audio-cassette with some of Beethoven's finest works that was given to me by my grand father when I was 5... On the tape, there is all 4 movements of the 5th symphony and Fidelio's overture. Also there is another piece wich I didnt know the name of... It turns out that it was my favorite one in the tape: I just discovered today by accdent after more than 20 years that it is Leonore 3 overture...I am so happy, Thank you granpa thank you!!!!!!
wow... it's so interesting that beethoven held such a place of esteem for you, and you had no previous familiarity with this overture. i'm glad you've finally discovered it.
the #3 is truly one of the *quintessential* pieces of beetoven, many musicians (myself included) consider this to be his finest and most monumental overture. .

Je n'est pas trouvé d'aussi bonne interprétation que celle-ci.
