PACT's community action meeting on June 7, 2011, was a huge milestone in our campaign to create great schools for all children in San Jose. More than 1200 people crammed into St. John Vianney Church to demand that public school officials replicate proven, high-performing public schools for low-income children, even when that requires closing the lowest-performing schools to make room for new ones. It was totally inspiring.
A team of PACT parent leaders from East Side and Downtown San Jose led the meeting, with 10 School Board members and 3 superintendents from 4 school districts, plus the top charter school leaders.
The school officials committed to our big education reform goals:
- getting all children on grade level (proficient) by 2020
- creating partnerships between districts and charter schools
- replicating high-performing school models, including charter schools
Ten years ago it might have been hard to say, but now it's just the simple truth. We know how to create great schools for all children in Silicon Valley. The only question remaining is whether we have the political will to replicate the proven models. We can do it!
