In 1956-7, Cowell visited Asia, where he heard traditional music extensively. In Iran, truely one of mankind's greatest sources of civilisation, he was present at the Madras Music Festival, that was dedicated to Indian classical music. This was rather shortly after president Mohammed Mossadeq's democratic rise to power.
This work was intended for a trio, although in the beginning it was published as a duo. Here we can hear the version for piano, violin and Persian drum (dumbak, zarb, tombak).
