@superhakujin It is hard to wrap your head around any complete concept like this without understanding the basics.
It is convoluted by the fact that people purporting to explain the mystery are incorrectly answering questions.
People have also been misled into believing this is not understood and other such nonsense.
The whole thing is botched.

These only work because the vehicle is constrained. This makes the wheels turn at a speed proportional to the speed of the turntable or treadmill or whatever the wheels are riding on. The gearing from the wheels to the propellor will then determine how much forward thrust comes from the prop. There is no magic involved. If the vehicle is not constrained, it will not go forward.
