Explosive lava bench collapse near Kalapana Hawaii November 2nd, 2010
Four-minute highlights of a thirty-minute event: In the pre-dawn light a quiet ocean entry lava flow suddenly begins exploding in small sections but rapidly spreading along a seven-hundred foot coastal section of the already unstable lava bench.
Littoral tephra ejections become quite violent as the event progressed: the entire bench boomed and shuttered and jet-engine type sounds in the mix.
This lava delta/bench first began forming when a large lava flow reached the ocean on July 25th, 2010. Since then it has poured out into the sea with new land about 500-feet, and added nearly 3/4's of a mile of new coastline, which continues to grow at this time.

Really love this... the rapidly changing gradients of color and sparkly flecks and neutral grey of the clouds, explosions. It is *VERY* alive and beautiful, and the overall balance and tone of the picture elements are also gorgeous - that early morning waking to get out there makes all the difference! I have to wonder if a more directional mic (parabolic?) or remote mic away from the fireline might bring out more of the subject noise and less of the environmental cracklings, but I'm a novice

What can one say, but humbly accept the beauty of nature.., and the gain/loss of divine real estate
