  • I had 2 celebritys and a Pontiac 6000 LE.I drove all 3 till at least 200,000 miles. The iron duke was the way to go.Only thing bout the the iron dukes was the valve cover needed to be changed about every 2 years or so but it was an easy fix.The 6000 was my grandmothers car that she bought new.Just sold it with 206,000 miles still going strong.Best years for the iron duke were 87 to 91.Gm worked to get them quieter and they did a good job on those.Drove the Pontiac for 8 years after she died.

  • @jas4925 I totally agree! I owned an '87 2.5 had it from '90-'06. One of the best cars I ever owned! When I had to get rid of it, the A/C still worked! <3

  • I have spent my fair share of time rebuilding these 2.8's. If it's not the crank splitting, the bearings spinning or the blocks cracking, its the intake gaskets leaking, or the crap Rochester POS crab failing. My advice to anyone who current owns or is planning on owning a GM with one of these engines. Swap it out with something else.

  • Interesting! Going to leave it..rather would of had the 2.5 litre..

  • I that engine what they call "the iron duke?"

  • The "iron duke" was the 2.5 engine..I had one in my old '87 Celebrity..I said, 2.5 by mistake in the vid..lol

  • @JeffN727 the 2.5 has timing gears with teeth turning in opposite directions, no chain

  • @asus3571

No, they're not. But they are 20-30 years old, and people find them in all sorts of conditions depending on how they've been treated.

Overrevving or lack of oil spins the rod bearings.

Pre-85s have smaller main bearings and a carb so they probably don't hold up as well. Some of the later descendants in the 90s are prone to intake gasket leaks, which if neglected leads to major problems. That reputation has been backported to the older 2.8, but I don't think it's as common with them.

  • @dkamcomie so the 2.8's are junk???

  • @jas4925 I can't explain it but I love these boxy wedge shaped cars from the 1980's. I was a kid of the 1980's, but when cars like the celebrity and 6000 came out, especially with the interior layout, they seemed so futuristic compared to other cars of the early 1980's and late 1970's. It is like all of a sudden a few years into the 1980's with cars like these, a sort of modern age of cars came about.

  • Will a 3.4L swap in? GM Perf. offered one as a replacement for S-10 carbureted 2.8s.
