I am an American who is fluent with American Sign Language (ASL) and Signing Exact English (SEE), but I am also a HUGE Alanis Morissette fan. I have to say that it's VERY intriguing to watch someone interpret this in another form of sign language. I could tell that there were mistakes, even though I don't know BSL or SSE, but doing that will help you improve! As far as interpreting...don't say you are an interpreter until you become certified! But keep up the good work, and practice!

hey dude. Forget the critisism people are giving you. Im on the first steps of BSL and it gives me emormous positivity even learning the basics. I hope to Join a course very soon and hope that i get to your level. Keep it up. Dazz

I agree with both stererp123 and bllipp below. There is a shortage of interprters so any effort is grateful. But stewart should have learnt the signs for thw words he wasn't sure about. I'm hearing myself but was born deaf due to glue ear. I had to sign until age 5 so I could learn to speak. Thanks stuart for a really good effort. May you florish with your signing.

I am at the same level as you Stewart, providing communication support for my colleagues, but I would not be so bold as to call myself an interpreter, like you title yourself. However, I communicate as best I can, for example I use the meaning of a word when translating it rather than the english word. By this I mean I would sign 'strange' for ironic, not 'iron' as you have. With more interaction with the deaf community, i think you will improve your fluency and the way you interpret.

Hi, I am currently doing my level 3 in BSL but have noticed that the above translation is incorrect. He actually says 'Hello people. Today's song, artist (sign for art not artist which would be performer) called Alanis Morisette. Song called 'Ironic'. I'm using BSL, British Sign Langauge with SSE Sign Supported English. And regarding the Chardonnay - as we can see he's trying his best, he began to sign it, but dropped it. It was a mistake, as you point out, but the fact he he began to try deserves praise, not abuse. Try CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM, not worthless comments about how he 'looks stupid'.

What a shallow point of view. It says that he works as an interpreter, but it may not be literal. I'm not a qualified interpreter, but I still interpret for events and Deaf functions.

Oh, and regarding culture, you will know that there is a NEED for more interpreters, to build on the enrichment of the culture. It's not DUE to the shortage (which I have never suggested). More interpreters are needed to help!

Erm, a fully qualified interpreter! yes i can see that he is trying his hardest but the fact that he says he is an interpreter and is out there workin as an interpreter is givin other interpreters a bad name! so on the the subject of shortages yes i understand, but what you dont, is that the shortage of terps is not due to deaf CULTURE as that is a set of shared values, beliefs and attitudes that deaf people share. BTW terps go for meanin so chardonnay wouldnt need to be spelt u would sign wine!
