These are actually very subtly witty insults. Take for example, 'Your mother was a hamster and your father smelled of elderberries'. Elderberries are a common ingredient in British fruit wine, usually cheap wine, which the French don't really see as real wine. A hamster is a rodent. To translate this insult into a way the rest of the world might understand, it's basically saying 'Your father was so drunk on cheap wine that he had his way with a rodent, and you are the offspring of that rodent'.

my physics teacher always puts references from this in worksheet questions. "if a rude Frenchman taunts King Arthur by blowing a fart in his general direction from 5m up and the wind moves the fart at 20 m/s, how long will it take for the fart to reach King Arthur?"

The correct answer is, NEVER. farts are gas by nature and the energy of it's movement would be easily dispelled traveling through the much denser nitrogen/oxygen atmosphere we breathe.

Supposing however, that farts traveled like much denser projectiles the fart would reach the king in a quarter of a second.......
