Vintage Karting Event at NCMP - June 18-20, 2009
Dual Rear Engine class is featured in this video. Participants included Lake Speed, Jeff Brown, Craig Bennet, Jim Walter, Dick Teal, Bill McCormack, Terry Ives, Louie Figone, George Sellon ... Watch some of the best US kart drivers from the 60s & 70s in action! Many of these drivers are former multi-time Grandnational champions, kart manufacturer team drivers, and of course Lake Speed is America's ONLY World Championship winning kart driver (1978). The Vintage Karting Association (vkavintagekarting.com) defines demonstration racing class guidelines. Karts typically run in this Dual Rear class are from the 1964-1972 period with two engines mounting in the rear behind the driver. The Engines of the period were industrial based 2-strokes purpose built for kart racing, manufacturers included: McCulloch, West Bend, Power Products, Homelite ... The motors were fully modified, usually running at least 2 methanol burning carbs. The starting method of the period was usually an electric fan belt starter and 2-3 people helping get the temperamental motors come to life. While kart handling is poor by modern standards, top speed is similar to modern 125cc sprint shifter karts.

This video contains segments shot at 300fps for slow motion playback.

  • The bi-motor belt start is freakin awesome.

Gotta love the vintage karts. I had a run in a minty 1974 with a 100cc parilla. Terrible balance, but so much fun to drive :)

  • Nice, some real kart racing from the roots!

  • Awesome slow motion footage!!
