Depleted Uranium intoxicating deformed children
Widyan Al Ubudy

Bringing a child into the world is a desire that many people around the world share. The devastating possibility of giving birth to a chronically deformed baby, however, is not something that many of us would ever consider; unfortunately this nightmare has become a reality for many parents across Iraq. As Australian, American and British soldiers withdraw from Iraq—they leave behind them civil unrest and a fragile nation producing deformed children. In 2004, Fallujah, located west of Baghdad, became the epicentre of US conflict. Since then, chronic birth deformities have increased by a staggering 1500%, and there has been a devastating surge in multiple early life cancers in babies born in the area.
Neurologists and obstetricians treating babies in Fallujah, say on average they see two children born with horrific deformities a day, particularly in the spinal cord, nervous system and head, deformities which they have failed to find an explanation for. Others, however, are more confident in identifying the cause.
Former Iraqi Minister of Women's Affairs, Dr Nawal Majeed a-Sammarai, has lobbied the UN general assembly to conduct a full investigation into the defects and the cause. Dr Majeed, among many others, has speculated that the U.S occupation of Iraq which has seen illegal usage of depleted uranium and chemical waste dumping across the country, particularly in Falllujah, as having a strong association with the rapid rise in baby deformities.
While US and Australian soldiers are protected against uranium dust and other toxic pollution, contaminated wreckage remains exposed on streets, water ways and areas where children play. The Iraqi Ministry of Environment revealed that over 12 locations in Fallujah have been contaminated with radiation. The US Army initially denied the relationship between birth defects and depleted uranium. However, the Pentagon later admitted to using white phosphorus and 1,200 tonnes of depleted uranium across Iraq. Since then, Iraqi officials have issued statements recommending that women living in Fallujah not conceive children.
28-year-old Hayfa' Shukur told her heart wrenching story to Inter Press Service reporter Ali Al-Fadhily, "I had two children who had brain damage when they were born... we used all our savings and borrowed so much money...they later died." Mrs Shukur revealed that her doctor said the cause of her children's brain damage was most likely a result of the use of forbidden chemicals; however, he refused to give an official written report. It's not only Mrs Shukur's doctor who is unwilling to officially speak up; the fear of reprisal has prevented many doctors from commenting on the epidemic.
While doctors and the US military remain silent, families in Fallujah have united in protest, accusing the US government of breaching international law and committing war crimes , and the UK government for failing to act against these crimes, despite having prior knowledge.

Unfortunately many residents were not aware of depleted uranium and it's possible affects hence increase in birth deformities , only now has it become a concern. Residents need to be more educated about it. Yes, this type of news is swept under the carpet in mainstream media so that governments are able to keep support for certain agendas e.g the war.

This is so terrible. It makes me sorry to be an american. Please don't blame us all. Blame the the Bush administration, and his greed for oil.

@SalientCyphaMusic I definitely do not blame the U.S citizens for anything. It's not so much about blaming, but rather raising awareness about the issue so people can finally think about the cost of the Iraq war for Iraq and not just the U.S and its allies. The bush administration made a of mistakes and the Iraq War in my view was one of the biggest mistakes in American history. Thank you for commenting. :)
