  • Wow cf , I love watching this race. Very impressive win by Slew O' Gold against this powerful field . What a great champion.

Thank you so much my friend :)

  • @Jazzgirl8888 Hey, I'm happy you liked the race, Jazzy! Your ever-positive thoughts are always appreciated here.

    God bless.

  • Thanks for finally posting this. I was at Belmont that day, and loved Slew o'Gold in this race, especially since I knew he lost the Marlboro Cup because of a rare inside closers bias Belmont happened to have three weeks earlier. This was one of the best races of Slew o'Gold's career.

  • @Wallyhorse You're very welcome. Thanks for reminding me of this race, my life has been pretty crazy lately. Terrific information about the Marlboro. It helps put Slew O' Gold's loss into better perspective, for sure.

    Have a good weekend!

  • This is the racing I miss watching with the whole racing cast.

  • @red2138 Sir Mala Mala was the rabbit for Slew o'Gold. His sole purpose was to ensure a decent pace for Slew, and he was backed out once he did what was intended of him in this race. He was a decent horse as I recall, but nowhere near Slew o'Gold's level or that of the top three year olds of 1983, probably the best such crop of the 1980's.

Little did anyone know then of course that All Along would come along two weeks later and take the Turf Classic and DC International & Horse of the Year.

  • @BE109 LOL of course I know you are joking =D BTW , I knew you would enjoy that Lady's Secret video I sent you. ( the one with John Henry in it ) I was sure you had seen it already but thought you might like to see it again.

    Thanks courtesy of cf :)

Talk soon BE and see you back over here =D

  • @Jazzgirl8888 Hey I love to talk horses with anyone who enjoys it as much as I do. Please don't knock Sunday Silence OK??? Of course you know I'm joking right? Take Care

  • @BE109 Hi BE ! I am quite well , thanks ! I didn't know you made this comment or I definitely would have replied earlier.

SOG was in full gear here no doubt . You are correct about John Henry. Everyone who knows me knows how I feel about him - racehorse to the core , I couldn't agree more .

Thank you so much for your comment my very good friend ! Please stop by my channel anytime or else I will see you over here :) I am always hanging out over here !

  • @Jazzgirl8888 Hey Jazzgirl8888 how are you doing? I too love this race,SOG was rollin' in this one. I mean John Henry was in there and he was a racehorse to the core. In my book that means SOG was as well! Good stuff!

  • @ahsans786 Actually, there was a very unusual rail closers bias at Belmont when the Marlboro Cup was run. That's why Slew o'Gold lost.

  • i have a question about this race. at around 6:25 sir mala mala really drops back pretty fast what happened? did he get hurt or just run out of energy? but then around 6:48 the announcer says that dessert wine dropped out of contention? im just kinda confused here. other then that it was an amazing race but i wish john henry had won i loved him,but couldnt help feeling excited about slew o' golds win! thanks for posting this race.

  • Only a narrow loss in the Marlboro Cup kept Slew o GOld from sweeping the New York Triple (woodward, marlboro, JCGC) two years in a row. Cordero was overfocused on keeping Bates Motel wide in the final turn, allowing Highland Blade to sneak through on the rail.
