The MacLeods don't own the castle anymore. The last real MacLeod of Dunvegan, Dame Flora, after a lifetime telling all MacLeods that the castle was really owned by the clan, a spiel which raised a lot of money, promptly left it to her rich lowland grandson from the already landed Wolridge-Gordon family. Is it any wonder women weren't chiefs in days of yore.

The Scottish clan structure is pretty complex. In the case of the MacLeods, there are actually two main branches of the clan: the Macleods of Harris and Dunvegan, whose chief is Macleod of Macleod, and the Macleods of Lewis, whose chief is Macleod of The Lewes. Both branches claim descent from Leòd, who lived in the 13th century.
