The Ryerson women's volleyball team was defeated 3-2 (24-26, 25-19, 25-19, 19-25, 6-15) in a see-saw match against the Queen's Gaels on Friday evening at Kerr Hall.

With the win, their fifth in a row, the Gaels improve to 10-5 and move into a first place tie in the OUA East division with Toronto (10-4). The Rams slip to 6-9 and remain in the fourth and final playoff spot in the East, two points up on Ottawa (5-9).

In the first set, Jennifer Williams (Stoney Creek, Ont.) was responsible for pulling the Rams into the lead at the first technical time out with a three-point serving streak. Williams served from a 4-6 deficit to a knotted score of 7-7, while Carli Yim (Markham, Ont.) put the final touch on a long rally with a short set over the net to bring Ryerson out on top 8-7. Yim made a huge block over Queen's powerful middle, Colleen Ogilvie (Calgary, Alta.) at 13-8, forcing a Gaels time out. The Gaels' Lorna Button (Newcastle, Ont.) helped Queen's pick up speed as she served from 15-15 through the second technical time out before forcing Ryerson to call time out with Queen's up 18-15. Kasandra Bracken (Sherwood Park, Alta.) threw down a great hit after the time out to put the Rams back on track, now down 18-16. Down 23-20 things weren't looking good for the Rams; however Lindsay Franco (Oakville, Ont.) kept her cool behind the service line and forced a Queen's time out with Ryerson only down 23-22. Franco continued to a four-point streak, with the assistance of Queen's Button hitting the antennae twice in a row, knotting the score 24-24. The Rams were unable to pull off a victory with a Williams hit being blocked, forcing a Ryerson time out at 24-25, which didn't stop Elyssa Heller (Highland Park, Ill.) from serving a clean ace for a Queen's win.

In the second set, Yim grabbed the reins with a four-point serving run early in the game putting the Rams up 7-3 with three of those points coming from Queen's hitting errors. Bracken tipped Ryerson in the lead 8-4 at the first technical time out. Soon after the technical, Williams had a two-point streak, which forced a Gaels time out at 10-3. Natalie Gray (Oshawa, Ont.) served her team well as she put Ryerson's comfortable lead in jeopardy, forcing a Rams time out at 14-11 after Leah Saar (Ajax, Ont.) shanked Gray's serve. Franco served from 15-11 through the second technical to 17-12. Shannon Walsh (Perth Road, Ont.) was substituted in as a serving specialist and performed well, as she forced a Ryerson time out at a tight 17-15. The Gaels assisted Walsh's serving with smart offense, placing their roll shots and hitting off Ryerson's block. The Gaels soon had to backpedal and call a time out with the Rams up 20-16. Ali McComb (Ottawa, Ont.) did her job as a serving specialist, putting the Rams up for good with a two point streak to 24-18. Gray made a solid swing to give the Gaels hope, but the rally to follow resulted in Ryerson's favour as Queen's setter Julie Lockwood (Calgary, Alta.) set a ball right side with no one there to receive it. Ryerson took the game 25-19.

The third set followed a fairly similar pattern to that of the second, with the Rams close at the first technical 7-8. Saar's float serves proved too challenging as the Gaels called a time out down 14-11. Saar continued serving through the technical with the Rams up 16-11 and finished her five-point streak at 17-12. Throughout the streak the Rams were working the net, with an exceptional block by Williams and Yim to get the 17th point. Katie Matthews (Aurora, Ont.) retaliated with a serving run of her own, forcing a Ryerson time out at 17-14 and concluded the run at 18-15. At 20-16 the Gaels called their final time out. From the middle, Yim made a great kill to finish the set 25-19 for the Rams.

The Rams seemed to be scrambling in the fourth set, with an early 8-3 shortfall at the first technical. With a lot of smart ball placement from the Gaels, the Rams had to regain focus with a time out at 5-12. The Gaels were up 16-10 at the second technical. With Williams behind the line at 12-17, Queen's made two errors: a roof dig by setter, Kristin Collins (Whitby, Ont.) and a hit into the net by Matthews, which caused the Gaels to call a time out at 17-14. Ryerson followed shortly after with a time out, the Gaels leading 20-14. Ogilvie tipped the ball to victory, with Queen's up 25-19.

The Rams still hadn't found their footing in the fifth set and head coach Dustin Reid called an early time out with the Rams down 5-2. At the switch Ryerson had only earned one point from a Williams' tip, with the Gaels leading 8-3. Button had a three -oint serving run from 11-5 up to 14-6, with her blockers not allowing anything across the net. Gray finished the set, 15-6 and the grabbed the match victory for the Gaels with a great kill.
