I have been trying to improve the reliability of sled kites in gusty winds. The key seems to be creating drag across the entire bottom of the sail. I have found a way to do that without adding tails. I have cut slits in the sail at the lower edge. The slits wave violently in the breeze, creating drag. For very light sail material I recommend placing a layer of transparent tape across the area before slitting.

  • the side-by-side comparison is really great! I just picked up some rip-stop, so I'll be making a few sleds soon to try out these new improvements. I think the slits on the bottom will really help.

    BTW, flying them side by side is really beautiful. it's almost like they're dancing!
