In 1963, Mignone Ratnam won a talent contest on the Radio Ceylon, the oldest radio station in the South East Asia and the world's second radio station. That was her first appearence on the radio. In 1965, Sri Lanka's pioneer broadcaster and DJ, Vernon Corea introduced Mignone to the band 'The Jetliners'. Vernon was later posted to BBC in London to head up the BBC Eastern service and in the early 70s he played their music on the BBC radio program 'London Sounds Eastern'. In 1980, Mignone & The Jetliners were awarded a 17 year contract in Hong Kong at the Regent Hotel.

Mignone now lives in Sri Lanka and is still performing. She released here first CD ' A Celebration Of Life' in 2003. Jetliners have since split up and members of the band are living in different parts of Europe and some in Sri Lanka. Recently they had a series of very successful re-union concerts in the US and Australia.

This is Jetliners's version of Bombay Meri Hai.

Thank you Nalith. Appreciate your encouragement!

  • This song was written by a husband and wife duo, Naju Kavarana (lyrics) and Minoo Kavarana (music). I personally knew them as a kid. A fun loving parsee couple from Bandra, Mumbai. The lyrics and music resonates their personality.

  • @andsomemo1

    Thanks for the information!!

  • Originally this song was sung by an Indian female singer when Jetliners were playing at the Taj Bombay, then Mignonne brought the song to Sri Lanka

  • The original was not by Usha Uthup but by her sister Uma Pocha. A song out of the late 1960s, a period which had so many talented Indians singing popular Western songs, mostly all from Bombay. There was Usha of course, Asha Puthli, Biddu, Ajit Singh, Nandu Bhende, Raja Andrews. Talk of The Town, now Not Just By The Bay or whatever, gave them a venue. And it was thanks to Radio Ceylon that a wider Indian audience heard them. The Jetliners popularised Miriam Makeba's Pata Pata. Wow. What an era.

  • Thanks for that...I cannot find the Usha Uthup version any where.

  • @Ozmulki

Original was by Usha Uthup, the best version. Popularized by Radio Ceylon. Subseuently sung by Jets. Hope this helps. Thanks for the comment!

  • I have the 45 version of this by the Jetliners. Who originally sang this? Was it Usha Uthup who also did a good version of it or was it the Jetliners? Can anyone tell?
