"In Key West, nobody cares who you want to sleep with."

"Key West changes you. You come to realize there's so much more to living life. This is a place where you can actually be yourself 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year."

"You have gays, straights, Europeans, Latin Americans, Blacks, Cubans, and White folks all living together on a 2 by 4 mile island. When you put people that close together, they tend to find ways to get along."

And on this amazing island only 90 miles from Cuba, this very diverse community celebrates the 25th anniversary of the Rainbow Flag by stretching the longest Rainbow Flag in history -- 8000 feet in all —from one end of the island to the other.

Meet Gilbert Baker, the gay Betsy Ross, who conceived the Rainbow Flag back in 1978 as a positive alternative to the pink triangle, the gay symbol devised by the Nazis. Watch as Gilbert and his talented team of volunteers create a three-ton marvel, a flag that incorporates all eight colors of the original: fuchsia, red, orange, yellow, green, turquoise, blue and purple, representing sex, life, healing, sunlight, nature, magic, serenity and spirit.

As Baker says, "Our mission as gay people, as 'out' gay people, is to give other gay people hope. The colors of the Rainbow Flag represent the promise that nothing bad will happen to us again."

  • A GREAT PLACE.

  • I was there in Jan 94, pre Cyclone, and loved Lighthouse Court, Copa etc. I'd go back. This is an amazing film. Thanks,

  • I was born in Key West. W00T for me. There aren't many of us true conchs, but lots of conch adoptees.

  • dah, really? I love it there, my Partner and I are born & raised Floridians, but have only visited Key west about once a yr. I would love to live there, but do not see it happening due to the cost.We live in NC now, and I am a bit home sick.

  • I've lived in Key West off and on since I was 7. Prices have skyrocketed........but I'm moving back again. Out of all the places I've been, Key West is still my favorite!

  • As a co-producer of this film, I was disappointed. I thought they were shooting a documentary of the largest gay flag and all the work that Gilbert Baker put into accomplishing this task, but it turned out to be just a promotional video for Key West.

  • I agree. Well i like to go on vacation there, bc to me its really cool as a place to get away, but yes the price to live there is insane.

  • born and raised in the upper keys lived im cayo hueso for 5 yeasr asa young man 82- 88 ... key west died about 5 years ago...the hole conch chain is just bull shit now,,,rip

  • I know a lot of people who are moving away from there just as I did...you have to be nothing close of a millionaire to own property with out effort.

  • I LOVE KEY WEST
