Use the openexr format to composite an animation with a sill image containing objects at varying distances from the camera. How cool is that.

    Absolutely. That's why you would use it. It doesn't have to render all of the geometry of the models, just a 2D image of those models. I failed to mention though, that you need to have "Compositing" checked in the Post Processing twirl down menu in the Render panel.
