Yosef Estes: Wife/Woman beating in Islam?

This is a short talk by Yosef Estes, an American Muslim man, regarding the so-called "beating of women" in Islam.

In truth, no beating in Islam is permitted; regardless of age, gender, or religion etc. Period. It is 'haram' (totally forbidden/unlawful) to harm yourself, let alone anyone else. The Last of the Great Prophets had said in his last sermon; "O people, your wives have a certain right over you and you have certain rights over them. Treat them well and be kind to them, for they are your partners and commited helpers" and he also said that "the best of the believers is the one who is the best to his wife." In addition to this, just moments before he passed away, he told the people present to treat women kindly, fairly, and with respect as during that era (and all civilizations before it and even after in the non-Muslim world) women were treated as the lowest class, unfairly, and unjust.
