For the 13th November VSOE Surrey Hills Luncheon Special, it fell to 60163 Tornado to do the honours and we begin with the loco emerging from under the bridge at Putney station.
A quick dash down the A3 brought us to West Byfleet and a surprisingly empty station car park.
From West Byfleet we headed down to a footpath crossing near the village of Westcott, for the final shot of the day.

The chime whistle removed at the ELR, replaced with the current lower tone pre war Crosby, was the one off 'Golden Eagle' I saw the number '60023'stamped on the bottom nut myself. That whistle is a standard A4/Britannia LNER/BR type. I was not aware that they had another one too!

  • Well, I am aware of the standard A1 whistle, however, the A4 was removed at the back end of 2009. The "newer" A1 chime was fitted after that. To be perfectly honest, both this whistle that she has now, as well as the one they fitted her with for 2010 (not the A4) have in my opinion been the wrong choice, The whistle from Golden Eagle sounded much better...... Indeed, an interesting talking point!!

  • Sounding absolutely lovely through West Byfleet!

  • Perfection as always, and I'm looking forward to seeing the new BR Green lined livery that will be applied in the new year...Bob

The 'new' Crosby chime whistle was fitted just before last weekends workings on the ELR replacing the A4 chime whistle that had been on the loco for, I understand, the last two years. That whistle was the one once fitted to 60023 'Golden Eagle'. It may well sound out of place on an A1 as they were never fitted with this type of whistle just the standard LNER bell whistle, mounted in front of the cab over the firebox.

    Interesting talking point!!

  • Hmm..... I only brought this up as in my videos from this year, I noticed that they had removed the A4 from last year and fitted her with a new A1 chime, and it was only recently that they lower tone was noticed by myself. I thought it sounded out of place on 60163, but there we go!! Thanks for your help.

  • Great shots. She was going well at Chilworth in contrast to 71000 on the 5th.

  • some top filming there great

There is nothing wrong with the whistle it sounds like that as it is a genuine prewar Crosby chime which have longer note tubes, the reason for the lower tone, unlike the post war LNER/BR chime whistles. It is the same type as fitted to both the P2 2-82s and the A4s before they were rmoved during WW2.

    Hope that helps,

    Peter.

  • Excellent video
