Javed Chaudhry - host of Kal Tak program in Pakistan - illustrates the importance China places on long-term thinking in its planning and decision-making. Li Peng, the former Premier of China and its chief negotiator with Great Britain on Hong Kong, famously did not let cumbersome and insulting British demands distract him from the overall goal of gaining control over Hong Kong. In Mr. Peng's mind, the significance of acquiring one of the world's most important financial and trading centers was worth any hassle and inconvenience of Britain's return conditions. Javed implies that Pakistan needs to take similar long-term view towards its decision-making and abandon the ad-hoc nature of policies since the country's inception.

  • Li Peng - the former Premier of China - is absolutely correct in his views that: (a) national decisions and policies must not be governed by emotions; and (b) nations must take a long-term perspective in formulating policies and key decisions.

Since inception - unlike India - Pak has followed short-term policies on an ad-hoc bases. The public misery on account of sinking economy, growing social instability, and failing institutions is a direct consequence of ruinous short-term thinking.
