Excerpt from the concert entitled, "Child of Glass," by the Pacific Symphony of Orange County, California. This was a subscription concert "Tchaikovsky Portrait" series presented in January, 2010 of the music of Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky with an actor, narrator, and visuals. It was written by Joseph Horowitz, with visuals by Peter Bogdanoff, and the voices of Nick Ullett and Alan Chapman.
That wife of his was first one of his students. She had a crush on him, and his crush (a female soprano) rejected him, so he married the lovelorn student instead on a mad rebound. He later had her put into an asylum where she would be until she died many years later. He, would not marry again, and died from a glass water, as his mother did. In those days a glass of water that had not be treated - boiled - could be deadly as he discovered. He also was the 1st conductor at Carnegie hall.

Tchaikovsky´s story:
A very sensitive child looses his mother very soon. ..a child that grows with a feeling of lonelyness and expects to find confort in love. That love becomes his music inspiration and reason to live. But Love would not heal his lonelyness. Society would not allow it.He attempts to hide that love, but his heart wouldn´t allow him. Knowing his love would never be considered beautifull, nor would be accepted by his family and society, he gives up on himself and comitts suicide.
