I first remember hearing the drums on an early Chaka Khan album and have spent the last 30 years trying to emulate that groove.
-
nice cymbals
-
2:35 the groove begins...
-
ohh man that is one funky beat
-
Steve Ferrone is gonna be on the upcomin Slash's solo album!!!
-
played with purdie, steve, many others - all beyond great - what an honor and privilege. And Steve is a really sweet human being - great guy !
-
Listen to that funky swing in his right foot during that syncopated 16th groove at 2:39
-
Goddamn, this is TIGHT drumming.
-
the guy sits on a rudimentary drum part like a machine all the way up to his solo, before he just turns it loose.
the sad thing is that many many people will watch this and think, "yeah, so?"
folks, THIS is what drumming is all about. the super fast double bass stuff might make the girls and gearheads in the front row ooh and ahh, but it will NEVER create a connection between the music and the audience.
rock on, Steve.
The funk begins and ends with Steve Ferrone.
Pocketmaster period. Check out all of Chaka Khan's early records 1978-1982. He did all of those records, and didn't share any credit until her 1984 album, and that was with a drum machine! Drum solos are great, but what
is going to keep live drummers being used is groove, pocket, feel, and time. Bottom line.

Steve has a killer groove. Always had. Tasty is such an understatement. If I were half the musician that he was, I'd be completely satisfied.
