Daniel Johnston - Grievances/Greensleeves

This somber 2006 video was created/edited by Not Daniel Johnston (aka Ken Lieck) using video footage recorded by Bill Johnston during SXSW 1997 and -- believe it or not -- stock footage from the Three Stooges' final film project "Kook's Tour" (1970). The song is a long-lost 1982 recording by indie rock hero Daniel Johnston, in which Dan revisits the lyrical themes of his own "song of songs" ("Grievances") and combines them with the traditional melody of "Greensleeves" ("Alas, my love, you do me wrong, To cast me off so discourteously..."), which is believed to have been composed by King Henry VIII in the 16th century.

That quote is false and has been repeated through several editions of a Daniel bio despite my objections to the publisher. I set up the SXSW 1997 gig and I have every single second of Daniel's performance on VHS tape. I can assure you that he was in a fantastically happy mood all night, and the closest thing he said to that quote is "There is no Satan anymore!" in response to an indecipherable shout from someone in the crowd. - 1b2s
