This special news report illustrates the effect methane gas has on our environment. Most people know the dangers of carbon dioxide, but there are other greenhouse gases that deserve attention. Methane gas (CH4) causes about 4-9% of the greenhouse effect on the planet Earth. Much of the methane that escapes into our atmosphere is caused by human activity. Rice paddy farming, livestock, landfills, and pipeline losses all lead to higher methane content. Methane emissions have increased 150% since pre-industrial times. This is the largest percentage increase of all the greenhouse gases. In the video Hilda Burke also discusses an interesting method one farm has taken to try and minimize their livestock's emission of methane. This is an example of just one of many precautions that can be adopted to try to reduce human impact on the environment. If human beings neglect to take better care of their environment, we may soon find that our home has become inhospitable to life.
