There is a growing fascination among evangelicals who are claiming to find truth by embracing elements of medieval mysticism as well as the modern, Eastern influenced mysticism.

To prove the point, Ingrid played a You Tube audio clip of Christian apologist Ravi Zacharius who, while discussing homosexuality, referenced Henri Nouwen as being a great saint of recent memory. Once a professor of psychology at Harvard University, Nouwen believed that it was his call to help every person claim his or her way to God. That's a message of universalism, not Christian theology.

@whynot1871 So, you profess to be a Protestant, and don't believe that Catholics are apostate. You must not know the 5 tenets of Protestantism: Scripture alone, Faith alone, Grace alone, Christ alone, to the Glory of God alone. Each of these 5 tenets are DENIED by Roman Catholicism, and Protestants were put to death over this in the Inquisitions. Luther, Calvin, Knox, and other founders of Protestantism called Catholicism apostate for these reasons.

Fr. Nouwen's name may mean "virtually nothing" to many Evangelicals - but what of it ? Ravi Zacharias is far from being a household among Catholics, but what does that prove ? Nothing. It means only that - surprise, surprise :) - people tend to be ignorant of authors not of their own religious tradition; especially if they don't read widely.

Where in the quotation from Nouwen are the words "all paths lead to God" ? The quotation does not contradict Acts 4.12 *All* salvation is from Christ.

Any christian who's focus shifts from being Christ in a fallen world eventually ends up in religious luke warm mediocrity . The focus then becomes back biting and internal interference, it's at this point a person truly has fallen from grace and has set themselves up against the will of God!

All I have to say is the Bible is God's Word and thats where we need you look as our final authority regardless of what people are saying around us. Matt. 15:8-9 & Matt. 7:21-24 pretty much some up what is going on in our world today with these false religions. And I have checked out Eckhart and Underhill even before reading your comments. They are totally against what God's Word teaches so why would a Christian be interested in their writings or practices? May God reveal His truth to you.

Some mystics are great, like Evelyn Underhill or Meister Eckhart, if you can understand them. Intelligent evangelicals should check them out. Contemplative spirituality is nothing more than listening to God. If you aren't just an authoritarian personality looking to pick fights in God's name - like Ken Silva - but you want to deepen your relationship with God, go for it. Forget about silly sexually-repressed Catholic mystics like John of the Cross or Teresa of Avila. Look to the eastern church.

The difference between the mystics and christians is. They read about prophesies and visions from people 2000 years ago Mystics have prophesies and visions now. If it was up to church they'd still kill mystics

I was raised in Poland (97% of it is catholic). It is really difficult to share the truth with them. i think that we should explain the gospel to them and try not to attack the religion itself (it will give no good results). I agree we are to take it more seriously. Christians usually treat catholicism simply as another denominations and presume there is no problem in being a believer and following catholic practices. It's absurd.
