  • Actually James revealed at Mayberry Days that he had no idea how to play the gultar at the time. He had a similar role on Twilight Zone where he played a gultar player returned from the dead.

  • oh yes!!

  • @AMSOMmp I've heard that before....always thought it was funny how well he acted it out though. Kinda like Otis, he never drank a drop, but he sure played a good drunk! lol

  • @CumpariSparacino Not by other singers. That's them. They didn't have mics small enough to pick up the acoustics and not show on screen so they'd record it in a booth and play it over the video. They'd do the vocals at the same time.

  • Well the vocals are all obviously dubbed by other singers and not particularly well, but the guitar picking is excellent. I was born in the New River Valley of Southern West Viginia, and am just amazed at the far reaching popularity of this song and even more amazed at how many great artists have sung and recorded it.

  • James Best was one of the best gittar pickers ever long before Roscoe P. Coltrane. Good you recognized him though. I watched this as a little kid, thought it was the coolest ---- ever, bought a James Best record and never made the connection until recently when i looked through the credits on this episode.Hillbilly electric guitar playing at its absolute best.

  • wouldn't it be fun to live in a small town where they have jam sessions in the county cells?

  • james best

  • Oh my God, that's Roscoe P. Coltrane! Is he actually playing? He's remarkably talented. Love this video. Thanks for posting it.
