IKEA Canada has announced that it will spent $4.6 million to outfit the rooftops of three of its Toronto-area stores with solar panels.
The home-furnishing retailer has received contracts from the Ontario Power Authority under the Feed-in Tariff program and expects to be feeding electricity to the grid by the end of the year. It said the 3,790 panels being installed will generate about 960,000 kilowatt-hours of clean, renewable energy for the grid each year.
It is believed to be the largest rooftop solar installation by a Canadian retailer.
Kerri Molinaro, president of IKEA Canada, said the rooftop solar installations solidify her company's "longstanding commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainability."
At a news conference at IKEA's Etobicoke outlet, the company's commitment to clean power was praised by Energy Minister Brad Duguid and by Colin Andersen, the OPA's chief executive officer.
"IKEA Canada is another great example of how our Green Energy Act is engaging businesses and building a cleaner electricity system for future generation," Mr. Duguid said.
"I can't think of a better way to celebrate the successful first year of the FIT Program than today's event," Colin said. "It's really great to see the program come to life and to be here first hand to congratulate IKEA Canada on the FIT projects at its stores in Etobicoke, North York and Vaughan. "
