Beagles chasing foxes in competition. The foxes always stay well ahead of the dogs, and will often sidetrack, or fool them. When the dogs lose or overrun the track it's called a "check." The dog who then recovers the line is awarded check points. The beagles aren't large enough or fast enough to catch the foxes, and the foxes seem to enjoy the chase as they will often slow down a bit if they get too far ahead. We had one stand out on the road, watching and waiting for us to release the dogs!

  • what state do u live in or have hounds in???

  • The ones I have in Canada, yes. The ones I have in the States are run on cottontail. They are all the same bloodline, though. Their mother is a very fast track-running dog. She has run down and caught her share of cottontails -- she's never far from the rabbit. Her pups run similarly -- power and a decent amount of control, willing to fix their own mistakes if they make them...no quit, good on snow or sod. :-)

  • do u run all your dogs on fox and hare???

  • Indeed, that's where the fox usually crosses, right at that place in the road next to the woods, because the clearing is smaller. He rarely crosses at the gate. Me approaching the road there turned him and forced him to go further away at the gate. The dogs came right on track and overran the end of scent for the width of the road. The dogs in the hare video are in this pack. :-)

  • no i run beagles on hare witch is bacicly the same thing and yes my hounds run to catch....but those dogs came out 30 or 40 feet off the line and the only way that i could understand that is if u turned the fox right inside the woods 10 or 15 feet....then its understandable ...i was very inpressed with the beagles on hare video ov yours they made that turn perfict

  • Do you run your beagles on fox? I turned the fox when I walked up to film the crossing. At the rate of speed they were going (trying to catch rather than merely follow) I think they did a good job of recovering the line. They only overran the width of the road and went back. To each his/her own, I guess. :-)

  • i never said my dogs were perfict but i just dont think tose dogs should be coming that far off the line its just not how it should be done i like speed but the dods need control also

  • Actually, it's a case of follow the fox, not follow a 2-day old footprint. But thank you for the kind remarks. I'm sure you will always get what you give.

  • Thank you for the kind words. I'm sure your dogs are quite perfect.

  • that was a bad display of beagles
