Memories. When I worked with Sports Holdings in Edmonton in the early '90s I was brought in to help with moving a 5 pin bowling centre into an old Safeway in St. Albert. The machines we put in were the Mendes pneumatic string machines.
Hadn't seen this in a long time.

The Old Grandin Bowl: they had these string machines, but tehy would not let me back there, the reason: Poisonious Gases, maybe they had a mold problem, but really, how hard is it to let how a string setter works, maybe thats why the whole alley moved in the mid 90s

I'm not going to work with any stringed instrument! :P

I go for free-falls. Because bowling should be played fairly. With strings, the pins don't move in the exact same way when you hit them with the ball. It's kind of like cheating. With free-fall pinsetters, you can be able to be very good at bowling that way. Strings are a nice invention. But it doesn't do bowlers any good when it comes to practice your bowling skills. And the other problem is the strings getting tangled at sometimes.

This is the bowling alley in Hope BC. I don't remember the name.

Also what is the purpose of the metal screen that drops down to hide the pins being lifted by their strings? They don't have it in the mini games just wondering why they have it in the real sized games, it also is on the rubberband duckpin machines as well. Is it so bowlers are not distracted while other lanes are cycling?

The shield is required for 5 pin tournament play. It is not required for regular league play or open play. Many centers don't have them. All it means is that they can't host provincial or national tournaments. Nobody really knows who made this stupid rule or why. Most people find it very distracting to stand there expecting the shield to raise when there is actually a tangle that you can't see. You can see it without a shield.
