What beautiful writing for the bass voice! I swear, Verdi was a complete genius, and Pape is a worthy exponent of his music. What a heartbreaking video! Thank you, gabba02, for posting this.

First time I've heard someone not pronounce the "m" in "dormirò sol".

It is obvious that you have not heard Pape live. Before I listen him, I had had the same idea like you. I was shocked. To undersand these type of voices like him, Stefan Kocan, James Morris from recordings is nearly impossible. That is why opera is still an acoustic art. Btw, I have heard him live this year as Filippo II at Bavarian State Opera. He has got one of the biggest and darkest voices I have ever heard. If you have an opportunity, go and listen him live.

I'm with DonPaolissimo. Pape sucks as an actor. Just cheesy, overdone, shallow, too simple in interpretation. All I hear is a guy "trying to sound sad".

Superficial attempt at emotion that leaves me rather cold, like DFD's pale attempts at Verdi roles. You are rather thin-skinned, apparently, & cannot deal with a difference of opinion, so this "discussion" is finito!

do not so harshly assume my ignorance, sir! i've heard all of the above and i believe pape competes with them grandly. the emotion of this performance is absolutely fantastic. i could feel his sorrow through my speakers clearly!

Well, I suppose you never heard Siepi, Christoff, Ghiaurov, Plishka, et al. Pape pales by comparison & could not shine their boots. After hearing those gentlemen, you're still "totally unconvinced", that's just unfortunate for you.
