Because of the worldwide declining prices for olive oil the production of olives as a source of income for Crete is not interesting anymore. Olive trees will be hacked down to give room to new buildings.
Scientists are concerned, try to interfere, to stop the plans.
The reasons may be obvious.
In the information of Mikis Theodorakis' website has been written that Mikis is very concerned too, and wants to start a campaign to save the olive trees.
My friend Ineke, Youtube user/inekemaa (Please, read her comments in this video!) , asked me to create a video about it, to support Mikis, and the scientists.
We ask you to send this video to your friends:
the more people know about it, the better, and a way to make this a news item, and therefore a chance to stop these ridiculous, disastrous plans.
This problem needs to be supported by World Wide Fund for Nature, and all political parties from Greece.

Add from Youtube user/aaz148 :
A month ago I have come across a photo of one the trees featured on this video. The photographer wrote that he shot it while on holidays in Crete calling it the oldest tree in the world (about 3,000 to 5,000 years old). The figures need to be checked but nonetheless the cause of saving them is sacred. He said that they used its branches during the Olympic opening ceremony in 2004.

But it is not only a problem for Crete, this counts also for Corfu!

*The first description of an Olive Tree is from Crete!
*The Olive Tree (Olea Europea) is one of the few tree species which can even bear fruits on rocky or infurtile soil.
*The Olea is known for her longevity and continuous productivity.
*The Olea is a symbol for Wisdom and Peace.
*At this time there are about 30 millions of Olive Trees on Crete.

I am convinced of the combination of the quality of the oil and the place where the olives are from.
That counts for all products of nature.
Maybe there are places in the world now where olive trees grow, but in less good circumstances, activated though by chemical fertilizers, and other not ecological treatments to make the product cheaper but: without the quality needed to have the trade mark: ecological....
Ecology is the future for mankind, and maybe this could be the key for Crete, for the Olive Trees there.
Wonderful composition.
Thank you Antoinette
You gave us a tender expression of eternity, through this living for ages olive tree and the music.
