NPL Video Special Report. Two NPL engineering apprentices, Jeff Roberts & Andrew Gill join the NPL team who designed and installed a new brake mechanism to fix Big Ben. Includes visit of Sir George Young, Minster for the Environment.
This is the first video I have seen of the chiming and striking trains actually doing their work. I have seen this on other tower clocks, two here in New Zealand - Ashburton (where the mechanism is in a glass cabin at ground level) and where I live in ROTORUA (the old Post Office which is now Tourism). That clock hasn't chimed since the mid 80s and of course they don't compare with the sheer size of the Westminster Clock.
