Our First Coast Plein Air Painters paintout for March was at the historic, beautiful Fort Caroline National Monument (geo:lat=30.386536586764183 geo:lon=-81.50062680244446). This is my 16x20 acrylic looking northwest. The video's first half is in real-time showing the underpainting.... the scond half is in time lapse (1.5 seconds every 30 seconds) ... trying to slow things down a bit as requested by many viewers. It was overcast at first, but soon became a beautiful day at this beautiful location. My thanks to the Park Rangers for allowing us the opportunity to paint there.

ABOUT FT. CAROLINE:
Frances first attempt to stake a permanent claim in North America was at La Caroline, a settlement near the mouth of the St. Johns River in Florida.

An exploratory expedition, commanded by Jean Ribault, left France in February 1562. On this voyage, he erected a monument (The Ribault Monument) at the River of May (now known as the St. Johns River).

A permanent settlement of 200 soldiers and artisans began in 1564, led by Rene de Goulaine de Laudonniere, who had accompanied Ribault on the previous expedition. With help from the Timucua Indians, the colonists began building a village and fort on the rivers south bank, naming the area La Caroline after their king, Charles IX.
In 1565, the settlement was attacked by Spanish soldiers from St. Augustine. A few survived to tell what happened.

  • i live less than 10 miles away from there and i think you have captured it well. i love that place, it was the first field trip i took back in first grade i'm now 17 and love to paint great work

  • Thank you.... the last time I was there before this paintout was with my 5th grade class in 1960. Keep painting! Thanks for the nice comment and thanks for watching!

  • wow, another amazing work of art!

how do you make your clouds so realistic?

its something ive noticed in all your paintings, you clouds are outstanding!

  • Thanks... actually i thought clouds are one of my weakest areas. This one was actually started backwards (blue-then pink then yellow as an experiment.. but... my final sky was tinted green, which bothered me greatly, so a week or so later, I did something I don't normally do, and repainted the sky on that plein air painting. It looks virtually the same, but the sky is not green anymore, more blue, yellow oxide and pink. The pink blends with the blue for subtle violet hues.

    Thanks for watching
