I read James Gunn's novel The Toy Collector expecting a heartwarming coming of age novel and instead, I got one of the most mean spirited, bile inducing tirades I've ever read. I know people in my own generation like the characters that populate that soulless tract!!! Still a good read, just not anything worth remembering or quoting.

He used to do a lot of writing and other work at Troma films. Then he went legit by writing the live-action Scooby Doo and Scooby Doo 2, as well as Zack Snyder's remake of Dawn of the Dead. With that money he was able to write and direct his own film, Slither.
