The mass murder of 800,000 people happened in the East African country of Rwanda. For 100 days, the Hutus slaughtered the Tutsis, just hours after the President's Juvenal Habyarimana death on April 6 until mid-July. The genocide claimed nearly 10% of Rwanda's population.

Rwanda's genocide was the culmination of the Belgian colonization. The Tutsis were the favorites. Two decades of good life, opportunities, and power over Rwanda proved catastrophic in the end.

Ethnic tensions between the Hutus (the majority), and Tutsis (the minority) is no longer a new issue. Clashes between the two have always been this way and were heightened after Belgium granted Rwanda's independence. Shortly thereafter, the Hutus overthrew the Tutsis and gained control over the capital.

Tutsis began to suffer systemic discrimination, and many of them fled to neighboring countries. In 1990, the Tutsi refugees formed the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) whose purpose is to regain control of Rwanda. The Rwandan Civil War has begun.

Ethnic conflicts inspired many localized killings in different regions. Hutu believed that the Tutsis are trying to enslave them, and, therefore, must be resisted no matter what. In 1993, the Hutu-led government was forced to sign an agreement of ceasefire primarily due to the pressure coming from the international community.

The assassination of President Habyarimana (a Hutu) in 1994 is the end of the ceasefire agreement. Just hours after the president's death, the genocide unfolded. Hutu extremists headed by the Interahamwe and the Impuzamugambi are the directors of the killings. The Tutsis rebels retaliated, and eventually defeated the government. After 100 days, 800,000 Tutsis and Hutu moderates were dead, majority of them with no means of protecting themselves.

Media Propaganda

The Hutus used the media to propel the people's hatred over the Tutsis. Many experts believed that this is crucial to the success of the genocide. The lack of interest from international media and community further the Hutus strength in carrying out their annihilation plan.

The widespread hate speeches against the Tutsis were even regarded as a norm. Kangura, a state-owned newspaper, published articles about anti-Tutsi and Anti-RPF campaigns. The newspaper even published what they call the "10 Hutu Commandments," which detailed how the Tutsis were to be dealt with. The individuals behind this paper were also accused of disseminating leaflets portraying the 1959 Hutu revolts that took the power off from the Tutsis.

The genocide wasn't that successful if not to the radio. The illiteracy rate during that time is relatively high. The government used the radio to deliver its message to the public. In March 1992, Rwanda Radio repeatedly broadcast that the Tutsis would attack the Hutus and the Hutus should kill them first. In a matter of hours, Hutu soldiers and its civilians killed hundreds of Tutsis. The repeated broadcast of hate themes spurred hundreds of Hutus to kill their Tutsi neighbors. The radio stations even directed where to find the Tutsis and how the killings are to be carried out.

The genocide in Rwanda is considered as the worst genocide in the 20th century. Though painful and barbaric, people have learned so much from it. If you want to learn more about Rwanda's bitter genocide history, contact us and we will arrange your safe visit to our country.

  • niggers will be niggers...............

  • with their machetes like vultures. There were around a thousand tutsis taking refuge for their very lives inside the hospital and when they saw the soldiers show up they though they were being saved, however a few white aid workers were picked up, they left, and as they were leaving the interahamwe watched them leave and then went in and massacred everyone. The world said never again after the holocaust in nazi Germany, unfortunately it happens over and over. Cambodia,bosnia,darfur,rwanda...

  • The Interahamwe have never payed for their crimes. They were driven into exile in the jungles of the Congo and left alone. Real shame. The lucky few that were killed by bullets got off easy. Most were hacked to death with machetes. IF you were white in Rwanda at that time, you got out, if you were black you were left to die. There is a video online showing Belgian soldiers evacuating white aid workers at a hospital, on the way in they passed several hundred Interahamwe waiting CONTINUE

  • These ppl commiting such crimes have no god,no love and they too shall die.

  • @SeisanStnc

"not recorded" are the key words. The violence was instituted since Rwabugiri started appartheid with tutsi-supremacy in the 19th century, over hundred years before the great massacre.

I also have objection to the phrase that suggests these massacres of '94 to have been "the worst genocide of the 20th century", as the hysteria was driven by fear and despair (tens of thousands of Hutu had been massacred by Tutsi between '90 and '93), whereas the Nazi holocaust was pure out of hatred.

  • What? I don't get the gist of anything you are saying.

  • @TGNolan01 the what about Armenians?
