ARE YOU A FOOTBALL PARENT (SOCCER PARENT)?
WANT TO TEACH YOUR SON OR DAUGHTER TO PLAY LIKE THAT?

YOU CAN!

IF I CAN DO IT, ANYONE CAN!

Ten or eleven years ago, my son, Ben, aged six looked me in the eye and insisted that he was going to be a professional footballer when he grew up. Initially, on the basis that this was childish pie in the sky and that professional football is probably the most competitive environment on the planet, I tried to protect him by looking to temper his dream telling him how difficult it was. However, he was having none of this defeatist parent talk and insisted that professional footballer was what he wanted and what he would be.

At this point, I was faced with a stark choice. Should I encourage him to go for it or should I, in the name of protecting him from ultimate disappointment, gradually steal his dream? You will not be surprised to hear that I decided that he and I together would go for it. Having made the decision, however, now as a 'football parent' ('soccer parent') I was faced with one particular monumental problem.

I KNEW ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ABOUT FOOTBALL
How on earth was I going to guide Ben towards becoming a professional footballer when I knew nothing whatsoever about football? I had gone to a rugby school and had not played football as such since I was ten years old. What on earth did I know?

I wasn't too confident at the outset but I resolved that I would do everything within my power and use everything that I knew to help Ben in fulfilling his ambition. And I resolved that what I didn't know I would find out.

It is now eleven years later and the proof of the pudding is in the eating. The above video amply demonstrates that Ben's level of technical ability is exceptional. Furthermore, he is much more than a football juggler. He is currently on trial with a Premier League academy, havng earlier this year signed professional forms with Crawley Town FC and becoming the youngest ever player to represent them in the Conference Premier when he came on against Tamorth in December 2009.

How did I do it? Well, of course, the most important element in the whole thing was, of course, Ben. The achievement is his. Without his application and hard work it would all have been a waste of time. Having said that, there is no doubt that without my guidance and help, he would not be the player he is today. Ask him and he will tell you exactly that. For my part, most of my efforts involved immense research, a preparedness to do whatever was necessary and an enormous amount of trial and error.

A VAST RESERVOIR OF KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
Over the past eleven years I have built a vast reservoir of experience and knowledge which I have instilled into an emanual titled Use Both Feet. This manual will give you insights into the process and accelerate your progress by helping you to avoid many of the mistakes that Ben and I made (mostly me).
