Hello. I'm Kristin Volk with a UPI top news headline on this Tuesday, April 24, 2007.
Nine U.S. soldiers are dead in Iraq after two suicide car bombs exploded at a patrol base in Diyala province. Yesterday's attack injured 20 others. The military says all of those killed were members of the Army's 82nd Airborne based in Fort Bragg, N.C.
Meanwhile, the U.S. government is concerned that the use of chlorine bombs in Iraq is now a threat to the U.S. A Homeland Security official says terrorists have learned to make bombs from chlorine tanks that kill by explosive force. They've also learned to use the chemical to suffocate victims with toxic fumes. The FBI has been alerted to some thefts of chlorine tanks from water treatment plants in California, but there's no intelligence indicating an imminent attack.
Russian President Vladimir Putin is declaring that tomorrow is a national day of mourning for the death of the country's first president, Boris Yelstin. This coincides with Yelstin's funeral that's also set for tomorrow. The funeral service for the leader who died yesterday will be held in Moscow and shown live on state TV. Putin is ordering that all entertainment events be canceled and flags nationwide be lowered to half-staff.
New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine is out of intensive care following a car crash nearly two weeks ago. Corzine's doctor says the governor is making a speedier recovery than expected. The 60-year-old Democrat suffered a fractured sternum, 11 broken ribs and a fractured left femur in the accident. The governor wasn't wearing a seatbelt as mandated
by state law.
That's all for now. Join us tomorrow for another headline update on upi.com.
