http://www.MsCharme.com What is Kindergarten readiness? With No Child Left Behind pushing children to test better at every level, preschool teachers are often left holding the bag for getting children "ready" for
school.
"Readiness" means different things to different people but it boils down to "is your child ready to learn in an elementary school setting?"
Kindergarten teachers have expressed their view that while it is great to have a child that enters kindergarten reading and doing basic math, there is a lot to be said for children that can function in a classroom seting without being a distraction or disruption to the class.
As preschool teachers, we need to be making sure that our kids are leaving our class with these skills. Give them self regulations skills so that they can monitor themselves and not having the teacher have to spend all his or her time disciplining and classroom management and control. Kids are in school to learn, not to have disorderly kids interrupt their learning.

  • virtual public schools could be an option

  • I totally agree. My comment was basically aimed at those that feel that preschool is a time to push academic skills so that they test well in kindergarten

  • Something to consider. Well said!

  • Great video! A very thoughtful perspective on successful learning. Even though your commentary is directed towards kindergarten age students, I think your "readiness" theory can be applied to students of all ages!
