We made this video of Lorette Velvette shortly after The Hellcats disbanded. This was The Hellcats from Memphis, TN, rather than the group of the same name out of New Jersey. The song was written by Lorette and performed by The Hellcats; Lisa McGaughran on bass, Misty White on drums, and Lorette on voice and guitar. The Hellcats were a ferocious and fun all girl group that I had seen a handful of times opening up for the Panther Burns. The lp this song was on, 'Hoodoo Train', came out on New Rose Records, Paris, and was produced by Doug Easley at famed Easley Recording studio in 1990. It was their first, and sadly their last lp, although it was preceded by a great ep; Cherry Mansion, also on New Rose (1987). We went into the studio, shortly thereafter to begin recording songs Lorette was writing that I very much wanted to include in our feature-length film project; Wayne County Ramblin'. Of which, Lorette was to personify the west-African spirit Oshun / Erzulie, aka Oxum, Ochun, besides contributing songs to the soundtrack. More information can be found at the film's website;
http://www.waynecountyramblin.com/
Lorette went on to record three solo lp's, and to record with the Kropotkins, out of NYC. This video was shot by Luis Cubillos on 35mm film, edited to video by Terrence P. Murphy, produced by Van Anderson, and directed by Dan Rose

  • that "dull" style reminds me a bit of portishead. however, Beth Gibbons *CAN* sing ;)

  • My God, pianoman! Thanks for the enlightening comment. There are not enough Portishead and Billy Joel videos to keep you company? "*CAN* sing ;)"? You're not asking for a refund are you? Take your moderate ears elsewhere!

  • @roastingears Oh I apologize. I should've checked first that you were involved in this stuff yourself, because you guys are known to be veeeeery biased about your own productions, let alone prevent people from viewing a video at best if we're not planning to write rave reviews on here. We'll make an agreement: I WILL take my moderate ears elsewhere, and you promise to do the same with your bias. A perfect deal!

  • Biased is a slim-minded description. Portishead vocals are just fine. Vocals here suit me fine, too. You appear incapable of making a deal. First you complain about vocals, then you wanna shake hands? I haven't checked, but perhaps your comments are not encouraged on Portishead postings either. Go start a fire on a Billy Joel video.

  • @pianoman74

    if you would have "checked first" you would have also noticed that this here was prior to portishead - although nobody needs a comepition anyway - so just chill

    regards li

  • I guess she must have the cramps.

  • The thing is, baby, Love is not dying, it never was. You have been had. so get up offa that bed .

  • I don't think Loretta was ever tough. When she was living with Tav, she never said boo to anybody.

  • what a great film and beautiful song. time stood still by my heart's stil broken

  • Beautiful. Man, I have such a crush on Lorette and I've never met her. Her version of How It Rained has slayed every single person I've ever played it to. Anybody who can't find beauty in her voice and playing is stone, tone deaf.
