More than 100 years of lotto tradition, the Christmas El Gordo lottery draw takes place yearly in the Spanish capital (Madrid) on December 22nd. The Spaniards (and surely some foreigners) even wake up early to watch (some live but most on tv) the traditional gala where the children of San Idelfonso (an elementary school in the center of Madrid) spend hours drawing the willing numbers out of huge golden drums at the national lottery headquarters. All eyes are on the drum, waiting for El Gordo ("The Fat One") to drop out of it and the main prize to be awarded.
