Kyrenia Liberty marks Cyprus' accession to an enlarged EU on May 1st 2004
with a simple ceremony at Leros Island

"1st of May 2004. Today Cyprus acceeds to the bigger family of Europe. The date of 1st of May 2004 which has been in our aspirations and our dreams becomes a reality. We are here today, on European soil, at the harbour of the Greek island of Leros, where the Kyrenia Liberty will hoist it's own flag of the family of Europe. The hope for us, for us Kyrenians, is that in this family Kyrenia will be free "

"The hope that through the European Union Kyrenia will become liberated is a deep hope on our part as Kyrenians. Captain, I deliver to you the flag to hoist on the mast of our vessel, but before you go to do this task, I would like to divulge a big secret which we announce today. A secret which we have kept as a keepsake -- our ship brings with it a flame from the Church of St. George in Kyrenia and here today, with the hope that the flame will bring our own liberty we will all go together, after the flag is raised, to the church of St. Marina for a prayer. A prayer for our liberation." (Applause and raising of the EU flag accompanied by the humn to Europe).
