The coldest inhabited community in North America has discovered a resource more precious than gold... It is heating their school... It may soon power their local utility.
"No one in Tok, Alaska blames Fast Eddy's Restaurant for charging $10.00 for a cheeseburger. They know it costs Eddy's over a $400.00 per day for heating oil, and $7,000.00 dollars each month for electricity." ...Dave Stancliff -- Tok resident /AP&T Public Relations Consultant.
Too many people in rural Alaska are now faced with keeping their dwelling warm or putting food on the table. Could the solution literally be growing in their backyards?
Tok, Alaska is a vulnerable island in a vast 39,000 acre sea of old growth, over-choked, wildfire-ready spruce trees that threaten to burn their community each summer.
Faced with sacrificing school programs to cover high energy costs, the local School District is now burning this hazardous forest fuel in their biomass energy system and saving $250,000.00 annually.
In a ground breaking effort, Tok's local utility reports progress in reaching out to find a stable, long-term source of biomass energy to replace their costly fossil fuel generation.
If Alaska Power and Telephone spends $1,000,000.00 million dollars annually to harvest and process wood locally it will help bring a struggling community back to life.
