Hundreds of people gathered at the Kootenai County Airport for a ceremony to officially rename the facility Gregory "Pappy" Boyington Field on Saturday. KXLY4's Autumn Wells reports.
@JustAintthatWay Funny what 2 or 3 days on Omaha Beach'll do for a 23 year old swabbie from Napa, ain't it? For almost sixty years, I hadn't a clue about what this man had sacrificed, until his brother, my other uncle put me wise. I thank God that I learned this in time to offer whatever aid I can, in his final days. None of us would be sitting here, safely blathering about old songs, by the comfy light of anything other than "green" light bulbs, shaded by tanned human skin. Do NOT forget.
@JustAintthatWay Well, Boyington himself said, "Show me a hero and I'll prove he's a bum." For my money, this only exalts the word "bum". I'm glad that Jr. was man enough to appreciate what his dad did for him and for the world. Go with God, Pappy. Sir. And high fives to Jr. As we speak, my own WWll hero uncle is living out his last days in a local rest home. Truth be told, I didn't really like him, as a kid. He was "different" from the rest of us.
For isftish and gdfsob - the Harriers were from VMA-214 in Yuma. Boyington's squadron was VMF-214....it was transitioned to an attack sqdn sometime in the '60's I believe. Hence the designation change from VMF to VMA
Props to the reporter for getting the air to air victory total right at 28 instead of the liberal crap that has taken some of them away from his score. Semper Fi Pappy!!!

Dear Mrs. reporter I would just like to tell you that Col. Boyington is a Marine, not a soldier.

Personally, I think instead of a pair of jet fighters.......
They should have had at least 1 f4u Corsair on hand.
