This chin na is kind of kongfu, some Taiji master teach this. But you should understand it is not Taiji kongfu at all. And this apply to some one don't know Taiji. The high level master both in California and in Beijing china, since they have high level Taiji kongfu, chin na doesn't work to them at all

@noksoocao why anyone would pick a fight with a 6'8", 325 person is beyond me :) I think most people would stand a pretty good chance of outrunning someone carrying that kind of weight

@piaten I agree that the compliance of the opponent (me) makes the demo a lot less fruitful than it could be; this was a long time ago when I was even less competent than I am now! (not to mention 3 stone lighter!) But at the same time, it wasn't intended as a demo of my teacher's skill, just a snapshot of practising push hands flow with a junior student.

Greetings! Nice flowingness and techniques, but it's hard to see what skill level you might possess from watching this clip. It might be better if your partner put up a little bit more of a challenge. And how about using some fajin and uprooting for your next push hands video.
hmmm considering all the postural \/iolations such as no expansion of the mingmen i wonder about the actual ability no insult intended. I don't know if these would b effecti\/e on someone 6'8 325 pounds. Do u guys practice much zhang zhuang?

@noksoocao "postural violations" are pretty specific to each school of Tai Chi. With your comment about the mingmen I think what you are really saying is "you're not doing it like my teacher does it". And you are correct - I am not. And that's ok. Just look around YouTube at the wide variety of styles under the Tai Chi umbrella and their different postural considerations. Even within Yang style the variations are huge, from Prof. Cheng's vertical posture to Yang Sao Chungs forward lean, etc..

@noksoocao
Secondly, "actual ability" - it's just a demo. It's impossible to know anything about somebody's actual ability against a resisting opponent from a demo against a student.
Third, "6'8 325 pounds", well, who knows? You have to tackle people differently depending on their physique, mass and way of moving. You'll never have as great an effect on somebody heavier as you would on somebody lighter - simple physics.

cool, how did u learn this? just soley taichi or multiple arts studied?

@TellinTheTruth I learned all that in push hands through trial and error. But a lock is a lock regardless of the art you learned it in, because the bones in the human arm work the same way regardless of what art you're doing :) The key principle in push hands is not to go against the force, but to go with it.
