The British Empire policies in what is now India, Pakistan and Bangladesh (similar policies were used in other parts of the world) led to the deaths of up to 25 million people over a period of 30 years.

From the documentary Racism - A History by the BBC

'Late Victorian Holocaust' by Mike Davis.

'The Corporation That Changed the World: How the East India Company Shaped the Modern Multinational' by Nick Robins.

Quotes from the time:

'Every civil building connected with Mahommedan tradition should be levelled to the ground without regard to antiquarian veneration or artistic predilection'. - British Prime Minister Palmerstons Letter No. 9 dated 9 October 1857, to Lord Canning, Viceroy of India, Canning Papers.

On Education:

Lord Curzon (Governor General of India 1895-99 and Viceroy 1899-1904, d.1925) was told by the Secretary of State for India, George Francis Hamilton, that they should so plan the educational text books that the differences between community and community are further strengthened. Another Viceroy, Lord Dufferin (1884-88), was advised by the Secretary of State in London that the division of religious feelings is greatly to our advantage, and that he expected some good as a result of your committee of inquiry on Indian education and on teaching material. 'We have maintained our power in India by playing-off one part against the other', the Secretary of State for India reminded yet another Viceroy, Lord Elgin (1862-63), 'and we must continue to do so. Do all you can, therefore, to prevent all having a common feeling'. Source: Rupee News Article 'Muslim rule in India: Myth and reality'.

  • america is better than england, at leest we didint kill india people

  • @Saveeuropefromislam dont believe everything you see on the BBC.

  • @Cerl84 I never said Britain was perfect, but it was a helluva lot better than the alternatives. People like you also forget that britain wasnt the only colonial power in india or africa. France, Germany, Holland, Russia, Sweden, Belgium etc were there as well. If you have time, just take a look at what THEY did.

It makes the isolated problems of the british empire look like tea parties.

  • @Cerl84 Just for the record, i am NOT racist. I have an uncle from Ghana, and many of my friends are from south asia and africa.

You want to know what the surprising thing is? much of what i have said on here is from accounts by THEIR FAMILIES. First hand accounts of people who were THERE. I talk nearly every week with a group of 14 Sikh historians, i constantly talk with my friends families about many things, including history. They would agree 100% with what i have said on here.

  • @cgmorvx1 because britain thought that its empire was going to alst a very long time. Please note that there were VERY VERY FEW PROBLEMS when britain was actually there. The problems appeared after the british had left.

I will repeat, YET AGAIN, things i have said before:

It is NOT britains problem, or fault, if a load of arrogant, ignorant, easily led idiots who follow different religions start fighting and killing each other

The same goes for everyone else who fights over religion.

  • @cgmorvx1 what bullshit are you spouting? the Mau Mau 'rebellion' wasnt actually a rebellion against bbritish rule it was the declaration of war by the largest kenyan tribe against all the other tribes, fueled by greed and lust for land and war. The other kenyan tribes approached the british, pleading for help, and we helped them.

Its not our fault that the african levies we raised killed, massacred and tortured captured Mau Mau.; The mau mau had done it to their families.....

  • @cgmorvx1 i think its quite ignorant of you to say the middle east and india were doing quite well when you say, in the same snetence, that they were full of warring tribes.

India was on the verge of yet ANOTHER massive war between the crumbling Marathan Confederacy and the decaying remains of the mughals. Britain got involved because Indian princes ASKED us to get involved. At first, britain was only bothered about protecting its trade outposts. They approached us FIRST.

  • @asas2jh many variables contributed to the first boer war, but the second one was started solely by the Boers because they thought they just didnt like the british.

  • @titytit Britain started the Anglo Boer War, go back and read up on the history of Cecil John Rhodes and the Jameson Raid.

  • Typical BBC rubbish. They start talking about the genocide of the British then it goes back to Germany. I note they talk about the Rehoboth Basters yet they fail to highlight the fact that they had been the allies of the Germany Government at the time and had a Treaty of Friendship and Protection as the Basters had been at war with the Herero.BBC makes really shitty documentaries void of many of the facts.
