This unique paper cutter does the job of scissors paper trimmers and light guillotines but more quickly, easily, in a smaller, ergonomic package and at lower cost. It is light, robust, fun to use, and looks good sitting on a desk without any risk of scratching it. As you can see, it needs one finger to operate; you dont even have to hold the paper down!

The cutting action is light, continuous, and straight, but may be guided to follow a line or picture edge, either directly or offset using the front graticule to make a border. It can be stopped and turned at corners through any angle, but the version shown will only cut straight.

A simple guide track (not shown) can be used where perfect straightness is required. Curve-cutting versions have been designed and patented. A pocket size version cuts five sheets of 80gsm paper easily and cleanly, but larger or powered versions would have greater capacity.

The cutter is impossible to use as a weapon or to self-harm and is therefore suitable for settings where paper cutting is currently banned for safety reasons.

There is unlimited scope for future development to serve specific markets and functions: preschool to drawing office, straight cuts or curves, manual or powered, promotional gifts to prestige professional.

The cutter is fully developed, tested, and ready for the final cosmetic design phase. A PCT patent has been lodged. A second patent is also possible based on an undisclosed discovery made during the prototyping phase. This video shows the superseded, less efficient prototype. The same mechanism may also be applied to conventional scissors, making them easier to use and ambidextrous.

The project needs a partner or licensee to provide management, marketing, and finance to get underway. Manufacturing and tooling would probably be done in Asia, with engineering adequately covered by the inventor, an experienced consulting machine, and product design engineer.

  • Yes, and that feature is included in the patent, but not in the prototype shown. It is quite a different design and the minimum curve radius is about 50mm. You can cut smaller radii with scissors because the paper is able to twist out of the way, but my cutter keeps the paper flat on the table so you don't need two hands.

The curved cut is free form like scissors.

  • Could one be created where it could cut both straight and curved lines?

And when you say curved lines, is that just one continuous cut or more of a free form cut (like a pair of scissors)?

  • Sorry, you can't yet, but it should be available by late 2009.

  • Where can I buy one?
