A LETTER TO THREE WIVES (1949)

Linda Darnell, Jeanne Crain and Ann Sothern make a beautiful and sophisticated trio in Joseph L. Mankiewicz's Oscar wining comedy A LETTER TO THREE WIVES (1949). Set in a small town on the Hudson, three friends receive a letter from the town flirt saying she's run off with one of their husbands. Trapped on a boat ride for the day and unable to contact their spouses, the girls review their respective marriages in three flashbacks. It won Mankiewicz Oscars for writing and directing and has superb performances by Kirk Douglas, Paul Douglas, Connie Gilchrist and the irrepressible Thelma Ritter. It's also filled with the wittiest dialogue this side of ALL ABOUT EVE, which won him Oscars in the same two categories the following year. It's a not to be missed laugh riot and the perfect antidote for a cold November.

  • i love this movie......always will love jeanne crain after seeing "pinky" years and years ago. this is a really good one!

  • Sounds like an awesome movie and if TOQ says watch, we're gonna watch. That's the law : )

  • I set the TiVo to record this even before your video. Now I'm excited to curl up with it. You should TOTALLY host TCM! Is it time for a Facebook campaign?

  • I absolutely agree! Steve Hayes should be a regular on TCM!

  • Thelma Ritter's not even in the opening credits! What's up with that?

  • Awesome review!

  • Good host and valid informative comments. Nice movies. A win, win, win situation.

  • This movie kinda ruined Brahms Piano Concerto #2 for me, because every time the music starts I hear "Why did George go-o-o fishing?" I love Mankiewicz's little tribute to his hometown (and mine) Wilkes-Barre, PA. It's mentioned here when Ann Southern and her boss are listening to their radio program in a letter from a viewer. (W-B more famously mentioned in "All About Eve"---"You've got that backwards, even for Wilkes-Barre!") Steve, time to review "The Mating Season" with Thelma & Gene Tierney!

  • I love the scene in Darnell's mother's house ( more than on the wrong side of the tracks ....almost on top of them ) each time the train goes by the house shakes, they have to stop talking and the fridge door swings open .

My fave line ? When Paul Douglas comes to pick her up her sister says "she's upstairs pounding her brains out with a powder puff " Just thinking of that line still makes me laugh
