Her eyes glazed over with tears, and it took all her strength to keep them from running.
He stood frozen in front of her, shock, despair, pain, and surprise flashing through his emerald green eyes. The wind rustled behind them, but neither moved one inch. There was no sound emerging from either being- only the sounds of their broken breathing.
His mouth opened slightly, as if to speak, but nothing came out.
The surprise he felt was too much to overcome.
She stood only steps away from him, still as a rock, but shattering like glass inside.
Her finger quickly wiped away the tears that threatened to show themselves.
Seconds ticked by, and his reaction didn't change.
Seconds ticked by, and her heart didn't slow.
"Why?" he finally asked, his voice a whisper, for he couldn't risk having it crack and show the stabbing pain he felt.
"There's someone else for you," her voice shook, almost violently, and fresh tears raced down her face. Again, her hand sprang up to flick them away.
"That's not true," he said, taking a step forward. Her small hands came forward, stopping him.
"I... I'm saying goodbye. It was good while it lasted, but I've seen how you look at her. And it's not the same with us. It's not how it used to be," she lifted up her finger as he opened his mouth to speak once again.
"I'll always love you. I will. Nothing will ever change that. And I know that you care for me. But it's changed. I'll never forget you, either. I'll never forget us," her voice was almost inaudible now, and his breathing had become ragged.
Before anyone could change their mind, she leaned in towards him, and brushed her lips against his cheek.
She brought herself to his ear and whispered, "If there really isn't someone else, then you'll follow me."
Their eyes locked for one last second, and then she turned away. She counted the footsteps she took away from him.
One.
He hadn't moved a muscle.
Two.
His breathing became shallow single breaths.
Three.
He took two steps forward, towards her.
Four.
He stopped, dead in his tracks, because he knew she was right.
Five.
Brand new tears sled down her cheeks and off into the misty air.
These, she didn't flick away.
