You have to just keep at it. This is the most difficult part of the game and you'll probably fail a lot at this task to begin with. Hiding half-way may help?

Go to the game's options menu, and make sure the help arrows are switched on. They will guide you through the game if you're having trouble finding out what to do.

Once you've got the arrows switched on, just play the game and pay attention to what the characters tell you to do. You will eventually get the phone.

To ask people on a date you have to build up a friendship, then flirt a tiny bit, then ask for their phone number (so sort of like real life then!).
